Navigating Judgment

Lately, every day has challenged my understanding of the world we live in. Challenging me to clarify what I know, believe, and value. The quote from The Science of Mind, a book written by Ernest Holmes* almost a hundred years ago, has become part of my socio/political navigation toolset.

“The criterion for any person as to what is right or wrong for them is not to be found in some other person's judgment. The criterion is: Does the thing I wish to do express more life, more happiness, more peace to myself, and at the same time harm no one? If it does, it is right. It is not selfish. But if it is done at the expense of anyone, then in such degree we are making a wrong use of the Law.” - Ernest Holmes, Science of Mind

In the quote, “Law” refers to the metaphysical idea that there is a life source back of everything, commonly referred to as God, which has laws or principles of operation. It's an active, creative force that does not play favorites. We are individuated expressions of it, and immersed in it. Whatever we think, feel, visualize, imagine, read, talk about, etc. are like planting seeds in the soil of this creative life source. By the principles of this “Law”, what is planted in it will grow; in other words, we reap what we sow. If you are new to the idea, note that it is nuanced and influenced by our conscious and subconscious minds, collective consciousness, and other factors that shape our perception of the world we live in. Just like the growth of a seed is influenced by the soil conditions and weather conditions.

* Ernest Holmes was a prominent religious philosopher, metaphysician, and author, best known for his foundational work, The Science of Mind: A Philosophy, A Faith, A Way of Life, first published in 1926. His work is based on New Thought teachings, and grounded in religion, science, and philosophy. He emphasized the power of thought and belief, asserting that individuals are "thinking centers in a Universal Mind" and can transform their lives by aligning their consciousness with the "All Good" and recognizing Spirit lives within them. Through his writings and teachings, Holmes sought to empower individuals to live more fully and successfully by applying these principles to all aspects of life.
